Hunter Mill District News - February 17, 2021

Feb. 17, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

Another winter storm is in our forecast for tomorrow, which may include a combination of snow and ice. Please take a few minutes to review the county's Guide to Snow for resources, including VDOT plowing information, safe shoveling tips and more. A few things you can do to prepare before the snow arrives:
  • Charge all your electronic devices, especially smart phones.
  • Make sure you have plenty of gas and windshield wiper fluid in your car.
  • Check on neighbors who are older or disabled to make sure they are OK and have enough food, etc.
  • Subscribe to the Fairfax Alerts .

Please Note if You Have a Vaccine Scheduled Tomorrow, Feb. 18
The COVID-19 vaccine clinics scheduled at the Fairfax County Government Center and the four Health Department District office sites on Thursday, Feb. 18 are cancelled, due to the expected winter storm. People who have appointments will receive an email informing them of the cancellation. The cancellation notice will contain a link to reschedule their appointment for clinics scheduled during the upcoming week. Please note that appointment locations may be at a different site than where you were originally scheduled.
Residents who need assistance in rescheduling their appointment may call the COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 703-324-7404. Learn more.

More Vaccine Updates:

Fairfax Health District Not Participating in Statewide COVID-19 Vaccine Registration System At This Time
The Fairfax County Health Department (covers Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, Falls Church, Vienna, Herndon and Clifton) is not participating in the statewide COVID-19 vaccine registration system. Eligible residents should continue to use the Fairfax County registration system already in place. The county has invested a lot of resources into our registration system and at this point, the decision was made to maintain our system that residents are familiar with to cut down on confusion. The Health Department will continue to have conversations with the state about registration as the vaccine process rolls out. Learn more.

Vaccine Registration Status Checker
The Health Department has identified some technical issues that have come up with the Vaccine Registration Status Checker that was launched on Friday, Feb. 12. More information is forthcoming, but if you have questions, call the Health Department's call center at 703-324-7404, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. (Evenings and weekends are recommended for shorter wait times.) More information on the status checker and vaccine dashboard is in my Feb. 12 vaccine update.

What You Need to Know When You Get Vaccinated AND After You Get Vaccinated
To date, more than 110,000 people have been vaccinated in Fairfax County (administered by both the Health Department and their vaccination partners). For those still waiting for vaccine, you may have questions about what happens during and after your appointment. These tips will help you know what to expect when you get vaccinated, what information you will receive and resources you can use to monitor your health after you are vaccinated. Learn more.

COVID-19 Symptoms Can Last for Months for “Long Haulers"
While most people fully recover from the virus, an estimated 10 to 30% experience long-term medical problems. The British Medical Journal found that 10% of people still experienced symptoms three weeks after their illness. Learn more.

Please stay safe and I will send you more information about the winter storm and vaccine distribution when it is available.

Respectfully,
Walter

Hunter Mill District News - February 10, 2021

Feb. 10, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

My office has received many emails and calls from residents who want to know how long it will take to get a vaccine appointment after they have registered with the Health Department. During yesterday's Board of Supervisors meeting, I sponsored a joint Board Matter with Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust directing county staff to expediate efforts to get this information to residents. County Executive Bryan Hill assured the Board that more communications and transparency on the vaccine queue will be coming in the next two weeks, beginning as early as this Friday, including:
  • An online vaccine and registration dashboard with a range of information, including the registration date the Health Department is now scheduling appointments for and the number of doses received/administered.
  • An online registration validation form for residents to confirm their registration and get a sense of where they are in line.
  • An online self-cancellation form for anyone who receives a vaccine from another health care provider.
  • Weekly emails to those on the waitlist to remind them that they are still registered.

The supply of vaccine coming to the Fairfax County Health Department continues to be far below what we need with

Feb. 3, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you enjoyed our first significant snowfall in two years! Gwenn on my staff took this photo of Lake Newport, one of the many picturesque areas in our snow-covered district. Also a reminder for the next snow – the county has a handy Snow Guide, which has links to many helpful resources.

Vaccine Update
Yesterday, the county's Health Department presented an update on vaccine distribution to the Board of Supervisors during the Health and Human Services Committee meeting. You can watch the meeting here and review the presentation here.

Among the highlights of the update:
  • The nation is facing limited vaccine supplies, which means limited supply for Fairfax Heath District residents through at least March.
  • Vaccination will be targeted while supply is limited following guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health.
  • As of right now, all of Virginia is receiving about 105,000 doses a week, of which 13,600 doses are sent to the Fairfax Health District.
  • Of those 13,600 doses, the Health Department is generally following state guidelines at this time and allocating about 50 percent for older adults and 50 percent for front line essential workers.
  • Administration of 2nd doses is also occurring at scheduled intervals (Pfizer – 3 weeks; Moderna – 4 weeks)
  • When supply is sufficient, vaccine will be administered by private providers, pharmacies, occupational health clinics, etc. (similar to flu vaccinations).
  •  Vaccination numbers as of Feb. 1:
  • Fairfax County Health Department: 45,238 doses
  • Inova: approximately 75,000 doses
  • Skilled nursing and assisted living facilities: 6,069 doses
  • Others: 16,368 doses
  • As of Feb. 1, more than 186,000 residents have pre-registered for the vaccine in the Fairfax Health District.

Additional Updates:
  • The county's online COVID-19 vaccine registration form will be offline for scheduled maintenance and updates from Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. to Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 a.m. This will not affect anyone who already has a scheduled appointment or anyone who is currently on the waitlist to get an appointment.
  • The Fairfax County Health Department has partnered with Trusted Doctors this week to help vaccinate people on the county's waitlist. Trusted Doctors is a local health care practice that will
